7-Eleven "SEVEN CAFE" surpassed 100M cups



Convenience store 7-Eleven Japan on July 18 announced that it sold over 100 million cups of "SEVEN CAFE" drip coffee since the launch of the service in this January.
Currently, approximately 12,500 stores are serving coffee made inside each store. Each store sells 83 cups everyday in average.
It aims at 450 million cups in the first year.

TEPCO to pay 500M bonus to employees



Tokyo Electric Power Company, Inc(TEPCO) on July 22 will pay 100,000 yen to all employee who is holding an administrative position as a section chief or above, for putting the breaks on drain of human resources. Approximately 5,000 employees will receive this bonus which amount to 500 milliom yen in total.
It cut 30 percent of salary in managers grades and 20 percent in other grades. 1,286 employees resigned their post voluntarily including 51 managers by this June.

McDonald's sales in a steep decline

Sales of McDonald's Japan in February decreased by 12.1 percent from the same month in last year. In January, it dropped by 17.0 percent. Its monthly sales has been below the results of previous year eleven times in a row.

U.S. Navy Japan prohibits alcohol after 10 PM

U.S. Force Japan Sasebo Base


U.S. Naval Force Japan ordered the prohibition of alcohol between 10 pm to 8 am to all the bases in Japan. It earlier prohibited the officers from going out between 11 pm and 5 am after two officers were arrested for assaulting an Okinawan female.

Mercedes's anime "NEXT A-Class" on YouTube



Mercedes-Benz Japan on YouTube uploaded "NEXT A-Class", a 6 minutes promotion anime created in cooperation with Production I.G and Hakuhodo, informing the new 2013 A-Class.
In the video, the new A-Class driven by characters chases legendary ramen noodle truck in futuristic city of Tokyo.

Design for the New National Stadium Japan building chosen

The New National Stadium Japan


JAPAN SPORT COUNCIL announced that the conceptual building design by Zaha Hadid Architects in Britain was chosen for the New National Stadium Japan in Shinjuku, Tokyo. There were eleven finalists on the web site chosen among the applicants from all over the world.
The stadium costs 130 billion yen($1.6B) in total for construction and will possibly be used for Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

AUN CONSULTING, Inc. on November 6th revealed the results of survey measured people's degrees of Japanophile(how much they like Japan) in ten Asian nations. The survey was held on the internet collecting 1,000 valid responses(100 for each country) from people over 18.

2012 Miss International won by a Japanese lady

Ikumi Yoshimatsu a 25-year-old Japanese female model won Miss International 2012 held in Naha, Okinawa for the first time as Japanese.
"Women will be opinion leaders in next generation. I talked about what action I would like to take in my speech."
She works as the sightseeing ambassador of her home city, Tosu City, Saga from March 2012.

Tohoku Earthquake, 2,814 people are still missing

Bodies were temporary buried in the ground kept waiting to be cremated.


National Police Agency stated the number of people died of the Great East Japan Earthquake is 15,870, and 2,814 are still missing at the point of September 12th 2012.

90 percents of Japanese men think economically supporting family is husband's role



Annual income of women who have been jobless once after marriage

Japanese women: Approximately 70% are below 1.3M yen($16,500)
American women: Over 40% are below 1.42M yen($18,000)


Men who think economical support for family is husband's role

Japanese men: Approximately 90%
American men: Approximately 50%


Women who do not want husband to take child-care leave

Japanese women: 53%
American women: 29%



Research was conducted by the team of Ochanomizu University to women aged between 20 to 39(917 Japaneses/1,508 Americans) and men who have a child aged below 12(715 Japaneses/1500 Americans).

It is still popular for Japanese women leaving job for a long time after marriage and having baby. However working as part timer is common among them.

71,900 cars wrecked by 3.11 earthquake and tsunami were removed

Cars swept away by tsunami


The Ministry of the Environment announced that 71,900 automobiles wrecked by Great East Japan Earthquake or 3.11 last year in Iwate, Miyagi and Fukushima were removed to temporal depositories.
17,200 wrecks in Iwate, 52,800 in Miyagi and 1900 in Fukushima were removed until July 11th 2011 and 42,500 were already disposed.

"MILD SEVEN" will be "MEVIUS" from Feb. 2013

Japan Tobacco(JT) changes the name of its long-selling brand cigarette "MILD SEVEN" to "MEVIUS" for domestic market from February 2013 and internationally in next one year in order..
Its smell, taste and price will stay the same.
"MILD SEVEN" the world's 5th best selling brand sells 76.5 billion cigarettes in the world, however it doesn't sell in the countries in Europe where the use of the word "mild" is prohibited by regulations. JT expands more of foreign markets with the new brand.
"MILD SEVEN" released in 1977 is the best-seller with 30 percents share in Japan.
