A High school and a junior high bankrupted



Educational institution, Chiba Kokusai(Chiba International) on May 7th applied for the Corporate Reorganization Law.
The total debt is approximately 300,000,000 yen.
It manages Chiba Kokusai Junior High School and Senior High School.
500 students are able to continue studying at present.

Elementary school principal arrested for carrying drug



An 57-year-old elementary school principal in Kasuga City, Fukuoka was arrested for carrying packages of stimulant drug on May 9th.
Oya Elementary School plans to hold explanatory meeting for the arrest of the principal.

Every high school student pays 50,000 yen for tablet



Public high school students in the first grade have to pay 50,000 yen for Windows 8 tablet device from 2014, Saga Prefectural Board of Education announced.
Every student who will enter public high school in the prefecture will be required to buy this "standard teaching material".

11 yo boy plunged into a train in Osaka



An eleven-year-old boy committed suicide plunging into the incoming train at JR Nozaki Station in Osaka at round 4:25 PM on February 14th. 32 trains were suspended for hours affecting 14,000 people.
The boy was on his way to the cramming school. His note left at home said "Please stop the reorganization of our school in exchange for a small life."
Three of elementary schools in the city will be consolidated into two in April. The boy's school will be abolished.

Number of Japanese studying abroad students keeps decreasing



In 2010, 58,060 Japanese studied abroad recent research of Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology reveled. The number has been decreased by 3.1 percent from the previous year shrinking six continuous years. It was 82,945 in 2004.

U.S. - 21,290(-14.3%)
China - 16,808(+9.1%)
U.K. - 3,851(-0.5%)
Australia - 2,413(-10.7%)


The number of foreign students in Japan on the other hands was 137,756 at the point of May 2012 decreased by 0.2 percent from the previous year.

Educational expenses of Japanese family is 1.91M yen



Educational expenses of Japanese families which have a elementary school child or older this year averages 1.912 million yen($2.286 million) increased by 3,000 yen from last year. This accounts for 38.6 percent of annual income.
The research was conducted by Japan Finance Corporation to 5,083 households which used educational loans in February and March.

Waseda University's plan for 150th anniversary educates global leaders

Waseda University announced "Waseda Vision 150", the medium- and long-term plans till 2032 when it will celebrate 150th anniversary.


Waseda Vision 150

・Decreases the number of undergraduate students by 20% to 35,000
・Introduces quarter system
・Teaches 50% of the classes in foreign languages
・Let all students study abroad or volunteer in a foreign country
・Doubles the number of foreign students to 10,000, 20% of the whole
・Triples the number of foreign instructors to 400
・Increases the number of full-time instructors by 20% to 2,000
・75% of the classes will focus on debates and exercises

Japan 101st on WEF "The Global Gender Gap Report"



The World Economic Forum(WEF) in "The Global Gender Gap Report 2012" revealed its evaluation for countries about equality of the sexes in politics, economics, health and education. Japan was 101st among 135 countries, 3 lower than the last year.
Female member of an assemblies and executives are rare in Japan. Female workforce is not effectively used in labour market though their education level is high, the report says.

A Keio University student dead after drinking alcohol

Keio University, Tokyo


A student of Keio University had been dead in June this year after drinking too much alcohol at a club gathering.
The university had already disolved the club. The cause of the student's death is seen as acute alcohol poisoning.

30 percents of school roads without sidewalk

School road


30 percents or 13,103 kilometer(8,142 miles) of national and prefectural road designated as school road had not had sidewalks by the end of March 2011, Japanese Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism revealed.
School road is defined by Traffic Safety Act as a road used more than 40 students per a day or a road located less than a kilometer from a school.

12 year old boy passed the Certified Weather Forecaster qualification



Yuki Kai a 12 year old boy living in Nagoya City passed qualification to become a Certified Weather Forecaster.
He became the youngest to hold the license at the age of 12 years and 11 months. Among 3,986 who took the qualification, 167 passed this time.

Number of child abuse cases hit the record of 248 during the first half of 2012



Japanese National Police Agency revealed that the number of child abuse cases exposed between January and June this year were 248, increased 95 from the same term of last year. The number of people disclosed were 255 which was 92 more than the last year.
